Protein Rich Drinks

The average person needs 60 grams of protein a day, according to Lisa Cicciarello Andrews, a registered dietitian at the University of Cincinnati. More than 100 grams a day can cause kidney stress and weight gain. Most Americans consume more protein than they need, but individuals might need more protein under certain conditions: after surgery, during an acute illness or when doing high intensity exercise. Those on a vegetarian or vegan diet may also need to increase their protein intake.
  1. Milk

    • Milk is the least expensive protein-rich drink, and also the easiest to find. One cup of whole milk contains 5 grams of saturated fat, so choose skim or nonfat milk; saturated fat increases blood cholesterol levels and increases the risk of heart disease, so skim milk is a better option, even for those trying to gain weight.

    Whey Protein Powder

    • Serious athletes often add whey protein powder to milk to boost its protein content. The additional amino acids in whey protein help athletes build muscle, improve body composition and enhance performance. Whey protein can also help manage nutritional intake in patients with cancer or diabetes.

    Individually Packaged Drinks

    • Several nutrition shakes on the market boast a high protein content. Since these products often come in individual cans and bottles, they are the most convenient option for people who don't have the time to mix their own shakes. Unlike milk, many of these drinks don't need refrigeration.

    Dairy Free Options

    • Lactose-intolerant individuals or those on a vegan diet have several alternatives for protein-rich drinks. Several soy, rice and almond milks on the market are fortified with protein to make them nutritionally comparable to dairy milk. Read the label on the drink before purchasing it, since dairy-free milks vary widely in their nutritional content.
