About BDS Education :


The BDS course is of five years duration consisting of a Pre-clinical and clinical training program of 4 years and one year of compulsory rotating internship. In the first two years of the BDS program, students are trained on biologic and material aspects of dentistry, with the help of audiovisual aids, models and patient simulators. Hands on clinical training are facilitated under the guidance and supervision of faculty, in the following years.
The course contents are delivered using didactic lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, seminars, problem based learning, self-directed learning, chair side teaching and learning, etc.


A graduate should be able to demonstrate the following skills necessary for the practice of dentistry:

  • Able to question and reason out the basic concepts and have the zeal to acquire new knowledge.
  • To be able to deliver comprehensive oral health care by achieving expertise in dental education.
  • Able to diagnose and manage with confidence, various common dental problems encountered in general dental practice keeping in mind the expectations and the right of society to receive the best possible treatment.
  • Acquire the skill and manual dexterity to prevent and manage complications encountered while performing various surgical and other procedures.
  • Possess skill to carry out certain investigative procedures and the ability to interpret laboratory findings.
  • Promote oral health in inaccessible areas and help to prevent oral diseases, wherever possible.
  • Competent in the control of pain and anxiety among the patient during dental treatment.

Karnataka is one of the leading states in the field of industrial development both in the private and public sectors and in the area of computer software, which has attracted national and international firms to the city of Bangalore. The state capital was long ago chosen by the central government for the location of a number of industries like Bharat Electronics Ltd, Bharat Earth movers, Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) etc. Bangalore has become one of the major centers of electronic industry apart from computer software. Students who have passed SSLC have to pursue a two-year Pre university course or a three-year diploma course before they are granted admission to a degree (baccalaureate) college. In the pre university course, the student has to choose one among the three streams of Arts, Commerce and Science depending on the kind of degree the student wants to pursue later. The first engineering college(UVCE) in Karnataka was started by the then Diwan of Mysore Sir M. Visvesvaraya in 1917 in Bengaluru. It was the fifth engineering college to be started in the country. By 1956, Karnataka had two Government and three private engineering colleges in the state.

There are 481 degree colleges affiliated with one of the universities in the state, viz. Bangalore University, Gulbarga University, Karnatak University, Kuvempu University, Mangalore University and Mysore University. In 1998, the engineering colleges in the state were brought under the newly formed Visvesvaraya Technological University headquartered at Belgaum, whereas the medical colleges are run under the jurisdiction of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Some of these baccalaureate colleges are accredited with the status of a deemed university. There are 186 engineering, 39 medical and 41 dental colleges in the state. Udupi, Sringeri, Gokarna and Melkote are well-known places of Sanskrit and Vedic learning. In 2015 the Central Government decided to establish the first Indian Institute of Technology in Karnataka at Dharwad.Tulu language is taught as an optional subject in the twin districts of South Canara and Udupi
