On striving to be equal with your competitors, there is one tactic you can do. In SEO, by being equal means creating a similar, if not the same, inbound links profile for your website that they have in theirs. You can perform this by sneaking into their portfolio of link backs using tools such as the BacklinkWatch.com. With their backlinks exposed before you, you can run a check on each page and see if it is possible to put your link in it as well. Doing this for several competitors would surely build up your profile of inbound links wonderfully.
