The main aim of setting up these RECs was to create the required technical manpower by providing undergraduate education and training in different branches of engineering & technology. Further, the RECs were also envisaged to function as pace setters and to provide academic leadership to the technical institutions in their respective regions.

In 2003, the Seventeen erstwhile Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) were rechristened as National Institute of Technology (NITs) and taken over as fully funded institutes of the Central Government and granted deemed university status. In addition, Central Government has also taken over 3 other Institutes namely Bihar Engineering Colleges, Patna, Government Engineering College, Raipur and Tripura Engineering Colleges, Agartala, and converted them into National Institute of Technology (NITs) on 28th January 2004, 1st December, 2005 and 1st April, 2006 respectively. Thus the total number of NITs has gone up to 20. These institutes are expected to be at par with other national level technical institutes and be able to fulfill the demand of high quality undergraduate and postgraduate level of education in engineering and technology. An Act, namely the National Institute of Technology Act, 2007 has since been enacted by Parliament so as to provide a common statutory framework for all NIT.

Admission to NITs is made through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

About NIT India

On the recommendations of Engineering Personnel Committee (EPC) set up by the Planning Commission in 1955, eight Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) (two in each regions - east, west, north & south) were set up in early sixties as joint and co-operative ventures of the Central and State Governments concerned with a view to provide the required technical manpower for the industrial projects being contemplated during the 2nd Five-Year Plan (1956-61). These institutes were registered as autonomous bodies under the Society Registration Act 1860 and affiliated to the State Universities in their respective regions. Gradually Seventeen Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) were established in various States as a joint and co-operative enterprise of the Central and the State Governments concerned. Each REC was to function as an all-India institution admitting students and recruiting faculty from all parts of the country. Fifty percent of the admissions of these institutions (each of which was meant to be equipped for a total annual student intake of 250) was reserved for students from States other than the one in which they are located. In addition to under-graduate courses, these colleges also offered Post-graduate courses in various fields.

An explosion has been reported at the Chennai's central railway station. 10 people have been injured and one is reportedly critical.

Reports suggest the blast took place at around 7:20 am, on the Guwahati-Bangalore Express, which was at the platform 9 of the station. The train had just arrived when the blast took place, reportedly between the S4 and S5 coaches. Both these coaches have been badly damaged. 

Police teams have rushed to the station. The injured have been taken to the Rajiv Gandhi government hospital.

12 Peoples Injured,1 person serious  and 1 dead in this bomb blast. A girl age 22 form Vijayawada was dead in this incident named as swathi.

 Two explosions on a train killed a 24-year-old woman and wounded nine people, two of them critically, at the Chennai Central Railway Station on Thursday morning. 

Sources say a man who was hiding in the train is being questioned.

The blasts took place at around 7:15 am in two sleeper coaches of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express, which had just pulled into platform 9 of the station for a 10-minute stop.

One of the bombs exploded under the seat of a woman, Swati, who was killed instantly. Officials said she was traveling from Bangalore to Vijayawada. Her relatives have been called to Chennai.

"They were minor intensity blasts. Experts from Delhi will be sent to investigate," said Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge. (also read: blasts of low intensity: top 10 facts)

"We heard a very loud explosion. It was only after the police came that we realised what had happened," said a passenger on the train.

A National Investigation Agency team is going to Chennai to join the investigations. There has been tight security across India as it nears the end of staggered voting for the national election.

The station was cordoned off after the blasts and scores of police personnel, along with sniffer dogs, checked the platforms and coaches. (see pix)

The state government has announced compensation of one lakh for the family of the woman who died, Rs. 55,000 for those who are critical and Rs. 5,000 for the others who were injured.

Officials also announced helpline numbers, 044 25357398 (Chennai), 080 22356409 and 080 22156553(Bangalore).

சென்னை சென்ட்ரல் ரயில் நிலையத்தின் 9வது பிளாட்பாரத்தில் குண்டுவெடிப்பு சம்பவம் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளது. பயங்கர சப்தத்துடன் சக்தி வாய்ந்த குண்டு வெடித்ததால் அங்கு பெரும் பரபரப்பு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. கவுஹாத்தி&பெங்களூரு விரைவு ரயில் 9வது நடைமேடைக்கு வந்த போது இந்த குண்டு வெடிப்பு சம்பவம் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளதாக தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. இந்த ரயிலின் எஸ் 4 பெட்டியில் பயங்கர சத்தத்துடன் குண்டு வெடித்ததாகவும் தகவல் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. இந்த குண்டுவெடிப்புச் சம்பவத்தில் 10 பேர் காயமடைந்துள்ளதாக ரயில்வே அதிகாரிகள் தகவல் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். படுகாயமடைந்த 10 பேரும் சிகிச்சைக்காக அரசு பொது மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். குண்டு வெடிப்பில் 2 ரயில் பெட்டிகள் முற்றிலும் சேதமடைந்துவிட்டதாகவவும் தெரிகிறது.

சென்னை சென்ட்ரலில் நிகழ்ந்த குண்டுவெடிப்பில் ஒருவர் பலியாகியுள்ளதாக தகவல் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. குண்டுவெடிப்பை தொடர்ந்து சென்னை சென்ட்ரலில் போலீஸார் பாதுகாப்பிற்காக குவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.
