Madras Christian College (MCC) began its life as a School founded in 1837 by Rev. John Anderson, a missionary from Scotland. The School became a College in 1865 during Dr William Miller’s dynamic stewardship of the institution. In 1937, a hundred years after founding, the College gave up its growingly strident and congested city centre establishment in Georgetown for a sprawling 365 acres spread in suburban Tambaram. It was in this felicitous campus that Dr A.J. Boyd and his team of professors evolved a new pattern of learning and living, which made ‘Tambaram’ a byword for a unique brand of education.
The college was one among the first institutions in the country to be granted Autonomy in 1978. Autonomy has helped to bring academic pursuits closer to the life of the student, teacher and the neighbourhood. Introduction of new courses, curricular innovations and examination reforms have made education here more significant and contemporary. Inducement to sustained industry, emphasis on work with a practical orientation, and methods of learning through oral and written presentations have enhanced competence and committment resulting in a more exhilarating study ethos and atmosphere.
A significant milestone in the 26th year of autonomy (2003-2004) was the ushering in of the restructured curriculum at the Postgraduate level of the Aided Stream and the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels of the Self-Financed Stream (SFS) under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The CBCS was introduced at the Undergraduate level of Aided Stream from the academic year 2004-2005. This facility strengthens the academic potential of the students as it provides flexibility in the choice of courses within the framework of the disciplines of study offered by the Departments. The introduction of the CBCS ensures compatibility with the academic norms practiced in similar institutions of excellence in India and abroad.
In 2012, the College was reaccredited with a grade A by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This has been made possible due to the College’s achievement in the area of academic research and consultancy offered by the faculty, International programmes, service-learning, student governance, sports, cultural activities and partnerships. Currently, College enrolment is a mix of over 3500 men and 2500 women students including nearly 150 research scholars from different parts of India and from 18 countries abroad. The College has a highly distinguished faculty. Innovative academic programmes are designed and offered by the Departments. Madras Christian College has consistently been ranked among the top Arts and Science Colleges in the country.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has awarded the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) status for the period 2014 – 2019.
The college has plethora of co-curricular activities, organized and run by students. It includes cultural festivals and competitions in public speaking and debating, quiz and creative writing, painting and sculpturing, dramatics and theatre and other games of mental and verbal skills which contribute to the wholesome development of the student. The College is endowed with fine play fields and sports facilities. In athletics and other sports activities the College continues to keep old traditions of winning and sportspersonship alive. About Presidency College:
Presidency College is an arts, law and science college in the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. Established as the Madras Preparatory School on October 15, 1840 and later, upgraded to a high school and then, graduate college, the Presidency College is one of the oldest government arts colleges in India. It is one of the two Presidency colleges established by the British in India, the other being the Presidency College, Kolkata.
In 1870, the college moved to its present location in Kamaraj Salai, opposite Marina Beach.
Presidency College is the first and the foremost institution established by the British India Government in 1840. Since then it has developed into one of the top 10 college in India with International reputation on education and research. This Government Institution in higher education can be called as The Light house of entire South India on Higher Education and Research. The foremost University of Madras province namely the University of Madras was started in 1857, nearly 17 years after the formation of Presidency College. On this account this college in proudly nick named as The Mother of Madras University. The college was conferred Autonomous status in the year 1987 and got the NAAC reaccreditation with ‘A’ Grade 90% credit.
Since 2007, the college has been offering B.Com(General) and B.C.A Courses under shift II system exclusively for Hearing Impaired students with the active support of the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu.
The College was ranked first ammong the Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu for the year 2007 and the award was presented by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 18, September 2008.

About Jamal Mohamed College:
Jamal Mohamed College was founded in 1951, as an affiliated college to the University of Madras and then affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, when it was formed in 1984.
The college is administered by the Society of Jamal Mohamed College. It is established in a sprawling land area of 87 acres, as a religious minority institution. Janab. M. Jamal Mohamed Sahib and Janab N.M. Khajamian Rowther, of revered memory, were the founding fathers of this institution.
In the year 1957 the college got the single honor of being bracketed with the thirty best colleges in India when Dan forth Foundation of USA selected the college for the award of study fellowships in U.S.A. In 1963 the college was elevated to the status of a post-graduate college.
In the year 1972, the college was recognized by UGC New Delhi, for Grant purposes under section 2(F) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission Act 1956. In 1977, on the recommendation of the University of Madras, the UGC recognized the college as one of the ten "Lead colleges" in the university area. During 2004-2005, the UGC, Government of Tamil Nadu and Bharathidasan University conferred Autonomous status for all the programmes.
The college was awarded the coveted Five Star Status by NAAC, an autonomous body of UGC, during the Golden Jubilee year 2000-2001. The college was re-accreditated, by NAAC at 'A' grade with CGPA of 3.6 out of 4.0 in January 2009. The college celebrated its Diamond Jubilee during 2010-2011.The UGC has conferred the prestigious status of College with Potential for Excellence to our college during 2012. The college completed sixty years of its very useful service in higher education with maximum student strength of 10640 and 383 teaching faculty. Many of our past students now occupy covetable positions in India and abroad in the field of Science and Technology, in Indian Administrative Services, Judiciary, Police Services, Information Technology, etc., all vouchsafing to the quality of education to which they were exposed in this campus.
EMBLEM & MOTTO
The emblem of the college consists of a shield divided into four parts with a circle in the middle. On the top left, there is a crescent and a star, a symbol of Islamic culture and faith in future prosperity. On the right, there is an open book symbolizing knowledge. At the bottom right, there is a lotus, the symbol for purity and prosperity. The bottom left represents a replica of Golden Rock standing for strength and striving. Inset in the mid-circle is the frontage of the college main building with a dome and minarets representing the essence of Islamic culture: The present is a preparation for the Hereafter. Underneath the shield is a ribbon containing a verse from the Holy Quran in Arabic Script followed by its translation in English that reads: 'Show us the right path', which is the motto of the college.
Thus the emblem of Jamal enshrines the ideals of cultural integration and guidance of learning and striving to succeed in the Here and the Hereafter, tempered with constant prayers to the Almighty to guide us on the straight path. The four figures in the shield are diagonally placed with green and yellow backgrounds, stranding prosperity and happiness.
About THE NEW College:
The New College is a Government-Aided Muslim minority College affiliated to the University of Madras. It was founded by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI). Since its founding in 1951 with about 200 intermediate course students, The New College has rigorously upheld commitment to providing quality Higher Education to the deserving students, especially from weaker sections of the society.
The college is currently run by a Managing Committee of the MEASI under the chairmanship of noted Chartered Accountant, Janab. U. Mohamed Khalilullah. On our beautiful campus on Peter’s Road, Royapettah, Chennai, about 5000 students pursue their intellectual passion through more than 35 academic programmes.
The New college campus also houses three other institutions run by its parent body viz., MEASI Academy of Architecture, MEASI Institute of Management, and MEASI Institute of Information Technology. Although the college and its allied institutions were established with a view to educationally empower students belonging to the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu, the college has students and teachers from different communities and from almost all parts of India. We have a few students from abroad as well. There is provision for nearly 500 students to reside in the College campus.
The parent body of the college uses a major share of income every year to give scholarships to students from economically less privileged families. Although the management of the college mainly depends on the contributions generous philanthropists from the community for its working capital, it has always strived to provide adequate infrastructure facilities for the college to meet the challenges of the changing times.
The college campus is equipped with all necessary facilities for the all-round development of students including playground, Hostel, fitness centre, Staff Lounge, Library, Canteen, Wi-Fi internet connectivity and so on. Students’ Union elections are conducted every year to select student representatives and to inculcate values of democracy in students.
The college has two active units of NCC. The units of NSS, Roteract Club, Youth Red Cross and other social service initiatives of the college won several accolades from different agencies including Chennai city police, and health department for their services. There is a mosque in the college campus which is open for all for worship and meditation.
The Diamond Jubilee block, the latest addition to the buildings in the campus, is mainly meant for setting up a Digital Library and Resource Centre. The college has been securing many major projects from the UGC and other agencies, and has always endeavoured to produce quality research works. Numerous research papers and books are published by our faculty every year.
The New College became autonomous in the year 2007, and it is recently re-accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade. Autonomy has enhanced us to periodically update our curriculum, and offer courses that are relevant to the times and aimed at enhancing employability of students. During its existence in the past 62 years, the college has produced about 75,000 graduates, many of whom have excelled in their chosen fields.
The college continues to extend its services to the nation by means of adopting healthy practices and dedicated efforts to ensure quality of education.
