ProcessDefinitions
Each workflow definitions isdefined by a single XML file. The XML file has several parts which define theworkflow. The key parts of the workflow definition are the asset, states, transitions, and tasks. The asset is whatever piece of content is being reviewedand approved in the workflow. States represent stages of the workflow; forexample: created, rejected, or approved. Transitions occur between states, andindicate what the next state should be. Tasks are steps in the workflow thatrequire user action.
Enhancing the portlet
This portlet is of coursevery basic and it could easily be enhanced in several
ways. Some suggestions:
_ Submit toa condor pool or Sun Grid Engine.
_ Let theuser choose which computational resource to submit to.
_ Add persistence by saving state to _le or database.
Liferay Theme
what can you do with a theme?
A theme can control the whole look and feelof the pages generated by Liferay. The portal-side
of the page can be completely customized.Even the appearance of the portlets that come with
Liferay can be customized using CSS, images, JavaScripts, and specialtemplates.
Liferay Portal 6.1
Liferay Portal 6.1 Surpasses Half a Million Downloads in First 3 Months
Liferay, Inc., provider of the world’s leading enterprise-class open source portal, announced today that the latest version of its flagship product, Liferay Portal 6.1, hit more than 550,000 downloads in the first three months of its release.
At the same time, Liferay announced the start of a new series of multi-city roadshows to bring the recently released Liferay Portal 6.1 Enterprise Edition (EE) directly to the backyards of global business users.
Liferay Portal 6.1’s high download numbers within the first months of its public debut is at a record level for the portal provider, signifying the support and enthusiasm that continues to build around the award-winning, open-source portal platform. The rate of downloads has more than doubled the rate for Liferay Portal 6.0’s release, which totaled about 230,000 downloads in its first three months. The strong reception for Liferay Portal 6.1 also points to the heavy demand for flexible, robust enterprise solutions in today’s fast-paced, increasingly collaborative business environment.
“We’re very pleased at the warm reception for Liferay Portal 6.1,” said Paul Hinz, Liferay’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Our product is becoming the de-facto standard for not just portal technology, but for enterprises’ broader web-platform strategies. This is being reflected in the download numbers for our freely available Community Edition as well as heightened interest in our professionally supported Enterprise Edition.”
A special Liferay Roadshows series, which begins on April 4 in Boston, Mass. and travels to more than 20 cities in the U.S. and parts of Europe before ending in May, will showcase the latest in the Liferay Portal platform. “Usability enhancements for workflow processing, publishing and content management make Liferay Portal 6.1 EE the richest portal offering yet for business users,” added Hinz.
Liferay experts will be on the ground demonstrating key features designed to empower the non-technical user and reduce IT intervention, including: Liferay Sync, a powerful document sharing vehicle providing offline synchronization for Liferay Portal users; Kaleo Forms, a visually stunning and functional workflow processing capability; and User Data Lists, which allow Liferay users to create custom lists and model business processes online without involving a developer.
Liferay’s partners around the world will participate in these events and give free consultations on how decision makers can build effective solutions for their business needs. CIGNEX Datamatics, DTS, Dunn Solutions, Emeldi, Fulcrum, Intelliware, Isos Technology, Rivet Logic, Savoir-faire Linux, Xtivia, Youngsoft and Zia Consulting are among the partners hitting the road with Liferay.
“We can talk at length about the impressive features that have been developed for Liferay Portal 6.1 EE, but nothing can quite capture the exciting offerings of this new product like an on-the-ground, live demonstration,” said Glenn Saler, Liferay’s Alliance Manager for North America. “The product speaks for itself.”

Cool CSS tricks
It’s sort of amazing what can be done with simple HTML markup and CSS. Here are two examples from the folks at DZone. First, Raymond Camden demonstrates HTML5 Form Validation with Style, using CSS Pseudo-Classes to perform DOM-level form validation. Second, Andrey Prikaznov shows you how to create CSS3 Animated Gears. Maybe less useful, but definitely more fun to look at.
If you’re doing Metro-style app development for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 7 – or maybe you just like how it looks – Stephen Walther has put together a thorough Introduction to CSS 3 Grid Layout for Metro apps. Remember, for general page layout: tables bad; CSS grids good.
Design ideas for the developer
Perhaps even more so than app UI, web development often highlights design alongside usability. And that’s not always a strong area for developers. To give you some inspiration, Codrops offers More Examples of Fresh Effects in Web Design. And of course, the nice thing about web design is the ability to view page source and see how they did it.
Speaking of how they did it, Joel Besada created a nifty jQuery Scroll Path plug-in that enables all sorts of vertical,
horizontal and even crazier page scrolling. He discusses the background of the plug-in on his blog, a Hint of Creative.
A simpler – and maybe more useful – patter is the jQuery-enabled infinite scroll. To learn more about it, check out Paul Irish’s explanation of the Infinite Scroll interaction design pattern, along with some implementations for Wordpress and general jQuery use. JS Plugins also offers a jQuery Infinite Scrollerwith demonstrations, documentation and source code.
