Tips For Save Paper

Around the world we use 1 million tonnes of paper every day. Too much of this paper usage is wasteful and unnecessary and puts huge pressures on the environment.

What can I do?

  • INDIVIDUALS: Save paper at home and at the office
  • BUSINESSES: Buy responsibly-produced paper for my business & make my pulp/paper business more sustainable

Why save paper?

Paper usage in many parts of the word is on the rise. Expanding production and pulp wood harvesting threatens some of the last remaining natural forests and the people and wildlife that depend on them.

The world´s paper hunger also significantly contributes to climate change

While using our print management system is an obvious paper saving tool, here are some other handy ideas to reduce your impact on the environment and save paper.
  1. Print duplex or two to a page- Print on both sides of the page or print two pages to a single side (also called N-Up printing). Combine both of these to print four pages on only one piece of paper! Not only save paper but also take longer to reach your print quota!
  2. Use PDF and go digital- Send business documents by e-mail in PDF format rather than printing and then faxing/mailing them. You no longer need to print, sign and send. Use an electronic signature and email documents that require a signature. While you’re at it, consider an FAX-to-email gateway so your inbound faxes arrive in your inbox.
  3. Use an electronic diary- Install a program on your laptop or computer and record all appointments and diary entries electronically. Google Calendar is our program of choice.
  4. Send e-cards- Save money and save the planet. Personalised season’s greetings can be sent quickly and easily by email. Save on stamps, cards and envelopes. Note: Some may thing you’re “cheap” doing this so make it known that your driver is not cost savings but the environment!

3 Tier Architecture (n-tier Arch)

Layered development or multi-layer development refers to a development model where presentation, business logic and data are separated. This brings many advantages, including cleaner code, increased maintainability and the ability to spread your application's load over multiple servers. In the discussion of layered design, you often see both the terms layer and tier. Generally, layer refers to a conceptual separation of the application, while tier defines physical boundaries. This article talks mainly about layers and presents a design where quite often most layers run on the same physical system, with some of them even in the same process space.
To get a general understanding of what a multi layered application looks like, consider the following diagram that shows a number of possible layers in a system.

Overview of Different Layers in a System
Figure 1 - Overview of the Different Layers in a System
This diagram describes a general process of an application that presents data that comes from a database. The application, like a web site or a Windows Forms application is usually called the Presentation layer. Then in the middle, you find the Business Logic Layer, or the BLL that is the bridge between the Presentation layer and the next layer: the Data Access Layer or the DAL. This DAL then talks to the database to perform selects, inserts, updates and deletes.
One of the ideas of this design is that you can replace one or more of the layers without affecting the others. So, you could for example drop the web site as the presentation layer and replace it with a Windows Forms application. This change wouldn't require a change in any of the other layers. Similarly, you should be able to remove a SQL Server specific DAL and replace it with an Oracle or Microsoft Access version without the Presentation layer even noticing the difference.
