IITs Going Back to Single Entrance Exam

IITs Mulling Going Back to Single Entrance Test Format

IITs are considering going back to the old system of a single entrance test for selecting candidates as the existing two-tier format proved "cumbersome" and "time consuming".

The two-tier format was introduced in 2012 by the then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal under an initiative to overhaul the examination system.

The JEE Apex Board at a meeting last Sunday decided to set up a committee to consider the proposal before it is placed in the IIT senate. The development was confirmed by IIT Bombay director Devang Khakhar.

IITs Going Back to Single Entrance Exam

The proposal for going back to the old format was considered, taking into account also the fact that it would help IITs to hold more counselling rounds as the premier technology institutes this year could only hold three rounds due to time constraints, said an IIT professor, who had been associated with counsellings in the past.
The process of holding the two-tier entrance test also proved cumbersome and time consuming involving a lot of resources in the process, he said.
The two-tier format was introduced in 2012 by the then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal under an initiative to overhaul the examination system. The system was introduced as part of a proposal to conduct a single entrance test for admission to IITs, NITs and other centrally funded technical institutes.
The move had met with stiff resistance by a section of IITs, led by IIT-Kanpur but they had to eventually acceded to the new system.
Under the two-tier format, the first stage is JEE Mains and the second stage JEE Advance. JEE Mains basically acted as a filter and those who cleared it appeared for the JEE Advance test for admission to IITs.

The JEE Main acted as a gateway for those aspiring for a seat in NITs.
Now, with the fresh proposal for going back to the old format, students would only have to sit for a single test for admission to the IITs.
The development came against the backdrop of NITs deciding to break away from the new system implemented in 2012. Now, admission to NITs would be entirely based on JEE Main scores as a government-appointed panel has recommend scrapping of the weightage given to marks obtained in board examinations.

To Do Things For Successful Leaders

Being successful as a leader can be hard. As demands on leaders increase, there is less time to focus on making the changes you need to make to do the job successfully. It’s a significant challenge to overcome because as more is expected of you, you find you have less time for development, and yet, improving your leadership skills is more important than ever.
You have to learn on the job, make the most of your surroundings, and ask those around you for help. You have to enlist their support as you do your best to develop yourself, your people, and your teams. And, this is why I call leadership a “contact sport”.
To Do Things For Successful Leaders

Leadership Is a Contact Sport is a leadership development model that has worked for hundreds of thousands of people. The original study, published in 2004, included 86,000 people. We now have research from 250,000 people who confirm that this model works. It helps them become highly successful leaders.
How does it work? The Leadership Is a Contact Sport model is just eight steps: Ask, Listen, Think, Thank, Respond, Involve, Change, Follow Up. Following is a short description of each step.
  1. Ask:  Ask people "How can I be a better _______ (manager, partner, team member, etc.)?
  2. Listen:  Listen to their answers.
  3. Think:  Think about their input.  What does it mean?
  4. Thank:  Thank people for sharing this valuable feedback with you.
  5. Respond:  Respond positively when receiving input.
  6. Involve:  Involve the people to support your change efforts.
  7. Change:  Change isn't an academic exercise.  Act on what you learn.
  8. Follow-up: Follow up regularly and stakeholders will notice the positive actions you’re taking based their input.

This simple model for leadership development works! If you want to get better, at work or at home, try it for yourself and see. And, if I can help you consider the possibility that despite all of your success to date you might have some things that you can change to be “even better”, then I will have done my job.

Power of Digital Media and Marketing

Tapping the power of digital media and Marketing

Log on to the web and attractive advertisements scream out at you. Beat the ambush and you are immediately waylaid by more subtle plugs on various online communities, forums, blogs and even social networking sites.
Instead of cribbing at these besieging promotions, why not hop onto the bandwagon of the new-age career of digital marketing.
Given today’s era of increasing web usage, growing internet penetration and social media ubiquity on the one hand and saturation of traditional marketing mediums on the other, digital marketing offers the perfect playground for businesses to reach audiences worldwide.
Digital marketing comprises the internet, email, mobile and other related channels that form the primary way people interact and communicate today. The high-impact, flexible, targeted, measurable and economical power of digital media has big and small companies alike scampering to exploit the novel, attractive and creative features in an attempt to both reach out to the customers and also mine untapped markets. Statistics reveal that companies that use internet marketing get up to 1300% profit as compared with traditional marketing! Little wonder then that digital media forms a lion’s share of most marketing campaigns – be it publicity, sales leads, community relations or customer service.
As a career prospect
The dynamic, upcoming industry of digital marketing is fast-gaining momentum as a promising career choice, especially among the youth. Helping companies stay ahead of the curve by utilising the commercial perspective of modern digital media is taking the world by storm. This massive marketing platform is poised to become the most sought-after profession what with its fascinating, stimulating and rewarding aspects.

As Rachna Gupta, Founder Director, International Institute of Creative Marketing opines, “The industry has already grown over $1 billion worldwide in the last three years and is expected to continue its upward trend. No marketing budget, plan or strategy is now considered complete unless it includes a digital component.”
Yet, it cannot be perceived as simply moving traditional marketing methods to a digital platform.
The work here is two-fold – building an online presence to up the brand awareness quotient as well as monitoring the public image, consumer insight and relationship with customers.
Digital marketers develop fine-tuned strategies for product launch, promotion, brand building, increasing sales or public relations. The tools for spreading the message are varied – targeted advertisements, search engine optimised articles, initiating conversations, participating in discussions, links, comments, polls and so on. They also tactically leverage different social media tools like Facebook, Orkut, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, Flickr, etc. for everything from creating a buzz about the product/service, getting people talking about the brand, generating leads/inquiries, powering traffic to websites and building fan loyalty. Digital marketing strategies have to be well-integrated into the overall marketing mix. Measuring the success/reach of digital marketing efforts with metrics like e-mail delivery statistics, search engine results, site visits, users’ clicks on links and related benchmarks is imperative.
Educational qualifications
Traditional marketing education, IT or mass communication background or experience in advertising/ sales/ brand building gives a foothold in the digital marketing industry. Yet, professional certification in digital marketing per se imparts thorough understanding of digital technologies and applications for improving customer engagement. Business schools have also started incorporating digital marketing modules in their marketing programmes.
Again, the field is changing dramatically and quickly. It is essential to keep abreast of constant changes or risk becoming obsolete.
Personal traits
Digital marketing demands tech-savvy individuals who can easily absorb new technology. Basic knowledge of web design, social media and web-related software is requisite. It also calls for a creative streak, analytical bent, good communication skills and willingness to spend long hours glued to the web. The work (completely different from merely browsing the web or connecting with friends) is demanding as it delivers real-time results and is measurable with more ease and accuracy. Being a nascent profession, employers look more for aptitude than experience!
Scope
Exciting job opportunities beckon in digital marketing solutions companies and in-house marketing/ social media departments of big organisations. For instance, HP-India created a job profile just to administer their Twitter and Facebook profiles!
Individuals can even opt to set up their own marketing firms or go the freelance route.
Roles and designations vary from company to company. Interesting positions are cropping up like interactive marketing specialist, social media strategist, audience acquisition manager, communities manager, social media coordinator, SEO strategist, social media web developer, web analytics manager, etc.
Trained and qualified digital marketing experts are in high demand everywhere as more and more companies are shifting their focus to digital marketing strategies. Being a new professional discipline, there is immense scope as well as ample room for everyone. Nidhi Makhija of Experience Commerce says, “The industry is so new and many opportunities lie undiscovered. There’s vast scope to grow either into a digital planner or as a business development executive. These are just stepping stones into higher positions – Account Directors and VPs of Business Development.”

Another plus point is the hefty pay packages as big companies allocate huge budgets for digital marketing. Freshers can easily earn Rs.2 to 3 lakhs per annum with prospects of exponential growth in the future.
To sum up, the future of marketing lies in the digital medium and making technology work for brands will surely rule the virtual world!

Flipkart Big Billion Sale October 2015

Flipkart Big Billion Sale October 2015 - Mobile App Only

Homegrown e-commerce giant Flipkart today announced the second edition of " Big Billion Sale," to be held between October 13 and 17.

The “Big Billion Sale” is the second edition of the discount sale and will be held from October 13-17. Unlike the previous version, this year’s sale will be a five-day long event.

The “Big Billion Sale” will be an app-only shopping event and will offer exciting offers and discounts across more than 70 product categories for customers.

“Celebrating the start of festive season in India, Big Billion Days will be the ultimate shopping event for customers to shop for gifts and other items for friends and family,” Flipkart said in a release.

Flipkart will offer special discounts on items like apparels, footwear, mobiles, furniture, laptops, toys, large appliances, jewelry, watches and home furnishings among others.

“India shops the most during this time of the year. With over 75 per cent of traffic coming via mobile, we expect this app only sale to be the biggest shopping event of the year. Bigger and better as compared to last year, we have worked towards ensuring a seamless shopping experience for our customers,” said Mukesh Bansal, Head of Commerce Platform, Flipkart & Chairman – Myntra.

“We have also ramped up our technology and supply chain support to ensure all our 50 million customers have the best ever mobile shopping experience,” he added.

Last October, Flipkart, one of the unicorns of the Indian start-up story, had organised ‘Big Billion Day’ to celebrate its one billion journey.

The company had announced deep discounts for products in over 70 categories with a sales target of $100 million in gross merchandise value.

However, the special day became a failure for the company and its founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal were forced to apologies for the troubles the customers faced.

To cater to the anticipated customer demand this year, Flipkart has opened new fulfillment centers across the country to guarantee efficient delivery.
